Sailors and Marines are in the Philippines helping the country recover from Typhoon Haiyan, which hit Nov. 8. But soldiers have also been pitching in during the relief effort after the devastating typhoon. Here Staff Sgt. Andrew Guingona from the 1st Special Forces Group, A Company, 4th Battalion, talks with residents about receiving relief supplies from a Navy helicopter Nov. 20. The 1st SFG, headquartered in Joint Base Lewis-McChord, has the Philippines as part of its area of responsibility. Soldiers from the unit have been working in the country for more than a decade as part of Operation Enduring Freedom-Philippines, according to the Army. The Department of Defense reported that 13,000 U.S. service members are helping in the relief effort, spearheaded by Marine Corps Lt. Gen. John E. Wissler. Wissler heads Joint Task Force 505, which is leading the U.S. military’s disaster relief efforts in the Philippines. (Mike Morones/Staff)
