Tuition assistance suspended in latest budget casualty The Army’s popular tuition assistance program is being suspended because of the budget squeeze, although the thousands of soldiers enrolled in courses will be allowed to complete those courses. But after the shutdown, which began at 5 p.m. Eastern time March 8, no one will be allowed to add new courses or enter the program. “Soldiers who are in courses now can complete those courses, but they will not be allowed to enroll in new courses,” said Lt. Col. Tom Alexander, spokesman for the Army’s personnel chief. “This suspension is necessary given the…
It looks like Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair’s secret nickname has inspired a meme of its own. In our latest update to Sinclair’s sex scandal and subsequent court-martial, we ran a few lines from his text message exchanges with his mistress. Facebook feedback tells us that readers particularly enjoyed this tidbit.
Ashley Broadway, the wife of a Fort Bragg, N.C. lieutenant colonel, has been named Fort Bragg’s Military Spouse of the Year 2013, one week after she refused a ‘guest’ membership to the Association of Bragg Officers’ Spouses. She initially applied for membership last December but was denied based on her lack of official military identification. The Army has stepped up its promo game in the weeks leading up to the West Point – Annapolis football game this weekend. (NZDefenceForce) Cpl. Luke Tamatea, Lance Cpl. Jacinda Baker and Pvt. Richard Harris lost their lives earlier this month when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in northeast Afghanistan. When their bodies arrived home to Christchurch, 200 military personnel greeted them with a massive haka, an ancient war dance traditionally performed by New Zealand’s native Maori civilization. Each branch of New Zealand’s military has its own haka. Some units have their own individual haka as well — pictured above is the choreography unique to the 2/1 RNZIR Battalion of the Defence Force.
It’s not every day you walk around a corner in a hospital and find a valued member of the staff with four paws. This is Staff Sgt. Nathan Canine, recently promoted from corporal (his rank in the video), a therapy dog at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital. While working on an update to a piece we did on the hospital’s opening, we ran into Nathan and Kristen Maisano, a doctor of occupational therapy at the hospital who told us about her four-legged companion’s duties. On top of being very cute and friendly, Nathan can fold laundry, act as a sleep companion…
