NBC’s hit show “The Voice” has been getting a lot of press. Here’s one area where the show may be rubbing service members the wrong way: Cee Lo Green’s wearing of military medals. A few emails have pointed out Mr. Green’s wearing of the Good Conduct Medal during a couple episodes of “The Voice.” You can see a photo of that here. He’s also wearing wings in that photo, too. There have been a couple discussions about this online, including this one, but otherwise not much chatter. Are you surprised this hasn’t received more attention?

The U.S. has already check-mated and removed Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, but they are still in play as part of a Canadian toy company’s war-themed chess set. The company, Hegwig & Sergeant Major, offers Taliban, Iraqi, Canadian, British and American pieces. The chess sets go for $250 a pop. George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Hussein and bin Laden are kings. The World Trade Center is a rook, a bomb-vest wearing Taliban suicide bomber is a knight, American soldiers and Mahdi Army soldiers are pawns. There are informative descriptions of pieces, like the Taliban rook, a bearded dude wielding…

Gen. George Casey, Army chief of staff, said last week that half of combat-ready troops will not be headed for Iraq or the ‘Stan, but instead will be ready to deploy wherever needed. That’s why you’re soon to get new ACUs and in-depth training in full spectrum operations. So, where might this push take you? China and North Korea are always a hot topic. Defense Secretary is in China right now, and this morning described North Korea as a “direct threat” due to “the combination of their continuing nuclear programs but also the progress that they’re making in the development…

Some serious jingle has been dropped in the past week to beef the Army’s vehicle fleet, and soldiers are sure to like what they see. Oshkosh Defense is the big winner, with the following contracts: $413 million to produce a much-needed 1,800 medium tactical vehicles for Army National Guard by March 12, 2013. $255 million for 250 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected All-Terrain Vehicle ambulances. We highlighted this vehicle in our AUSA coverage. This is a HUGE plus for combat medical care. They will roll out by May 31, 2012. $34 million for 78 M1076 palletized load systemtrailers and 78 M1075A1…

NASA let down legions of breath-holders who were convinced an alien roll-out would happen on Thursday. But do not be disappointed. The Army has unveiled a document thought by many to be a mythical concoction, or at least one that would remain hidden deep in the bowels of the Puzzle Palace, never to be seen by mere mortals. But now we know it does exist: The Ground Combat Vehicle’s Request for Proposal. All kidding aside, there were no surprises contained in the RfP, though the long wait and recent fiscal fallout made some question whether it would come to pass.…

First introduced in 1966, the 40mm, belt-fed automatic grenade launcher is arguably one of the coolest – and baddest – weapons in the organic infantry. The Rapid Fielding Initiative now looks to improve the MK19 with an advanced sighting/targeting system. In a “sources sought” notice released this morning, the service described “an immediate need for an advanced sighting/targeting system for the MK-19 Grenade Launcher. The system will operate during day, night and all weather conditions.” The notice set forth the following requirements: The sighting system will allow the weapon to be aimed and fired in the same time frame as…

Air Force Army Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are taking significant strides, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Army logged more than 1 million flight hours earlier this year, and is growing more comfortable – and capable – with an ever-increasing inventory. The service is flying the MQ-1C Gray Eagle over Iraqi skies from Camp Taji. Only two deployed Army units fly the Gray Eagle, according to this story. The plan is to field up to 132 Gray Eagles in 11 units at the division level. Operators in Iraq are attached to the Enhanced Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, from Fort…

Katherine Miller, who quit West Point in August, said she would come back in the Army – if “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is repealed. The admitted lesbian told the Associated Press that she left the U.S. Military Academy to fight the policy and because she couldn’t keep lying about her sexuality. Miller, who is now attending Yale University, said the end of DADT would help the military by opening it up to more qualified candidates. At the time of her departure, Miller was the ninth-ranked Cadet in her class of 1,157, and boasted a grade point average of 3.829. She…

The Army is one step closer to launching its Individual Carbine Competition. On Wednesday, service leaders at Picatinny Arsenal invited competitors to sign up for a familiarization shoot and compatibility check. The familiarization shoot will provide competitors 10,080 rounds (six cases) of M855A1 Enhanced Performance Rounds, aka “Green Ammo.” Though it will be offered only in 5.56 mm, the competition is open to any caliber. But chances are, if the weapon isn’t 5.56 mm or 7.62 mm, you can count it out. The M320 Grenade Launcher and M26 Modular Accessory Shotgun System will also be on hand so industry can…
