UNITED STATES: Undated picture of US General Douglas Mac Arthur born in Little Rock in 1880 and dead in 1964. He trained at West Point, joined the US army engineers, and in World War I served with distinction in France. In 1941 he became commanding general of the US armed forces in the Far East, and from Australia directed the recapture of the SW Pacific (1942-45). He formally accepted Japanese surrender, and commanded the occupation of Japan (1945-51), introducing a new constitution. In 1950 he led the UN forces in the Korean War, defeating the North Korean army, but was relieved of command when he tried to continue the war against China.
