Father's vigil for soldier missing in Dugway desert

The father of a soldier believed lost in the desert near Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, is bracing for a grim Father’s Day.

A month after Spc. Joseph Michael Bushling, 26, called a fellow soldier to say he was out of gas, cold and walking without shoes, authorities are still searching for him across the rugged, mountainous terrain.

His dad, Kevin Bushling, of Russellville, Ark., had journeyed to Utah to try to find his son and then returned home. Deputies have found the soldier’s vehicle and his Razorbacks baseball cap, but have since found no other clues, according to the Associated Press.

“I am glad they are still searching,” Kevin Bushling told the AP. He said he was shocked to learn several weeks ago that the search had been called off but is pleased with the resumption.

“At this point, I’ve come to the conclusion if they don’t find him, I’ll have to deal with the fact he’s out there and I have to give up. I can’t live my life every day waiting for the phone to ring,” Bushling said.
