USAREUR is throwing in the (gym) towel

Soldiers and families stationed in Europe will have to bring their own towels to the fitness centers starting April 15.

According to a press release from USAG-Grafenwoehr public affairs, installations will discontinue towel service in compliance with an executive order President Obama signed at the end of 2009, requiring federal agencies to reduce potable water consumption.

Apparently, Grafenwoehr alone spends $65,000 a year on towels, detergent, energy and labor to maintain the amenity at its fitness centers, while consuming 6,500 cubic meters of water to wash them.

Europe’s Installation Command expects to save around $530,000 this year by doing away with towel service.

So…don’t forget to bring a towel!

  1. I work for a large, high-tech firm and we stopped towel service at our on-site gyms some time ago to cut costs. Can we afford the towel service? yes, but it’s about being frugal and cutting unnecessary costs. I’d much rather see towel services stopped at military gyms than, say, tuition assistance stopped.
